Awesome Radio July 22, 2010 Donna Holsclaw (LOUISVILLE, KY, US) We were looking for a way to have music outside without having to have spend alot of money.
This radio has worked out well. The speaker wasn't loud enough, so we hooked it up to an amplifier, added a couple of Infinity Speakers, and now we have an awesome outdoor sound system.
We love searching all the radio stations. It is great not having to listen to the same local radio stations that plays the same mainstream music over and over again.
Terrible User Interface July 9, 2010 John T. Horner (Morgan Hill, CA USA) I'm an experienced engineer and am comfortable configuring networks and such, and I still hate trying to use this radio.
Figuring out how to add a radio station which isn't already in their database is not at all easy, and any stations which use anything other than simple MP3 or WMA formats will not work at all. One has to spend a lot of time searching for cryptic URLs with the necessary stream, because just going to the website of the radio station you want to add doesn't work. Aluratek's website has a very limited list of stations they have already set up. After that, you are on your own. Chances are that the stations you would like to add are not going to be available at all because they are using one of the latest streaming systems from Apple, Adobe or Real Networks. Sorry Charlie, those don't work at all with this little beast.
The clock is way too bright for bedside use at night, even on the lowest setting.
I have yet to figure out how to get the alarm to go off using the Internet radio station of my choice as the music source.
You can't just turn the thing on and have it keep playing whatever you were playing the last time you used it. You know, the way an actual RADIO works. Nope, you are into to multi-level menus every time you want to tune in an internet radio station.
The owner's manual is terrible and their website isn't much better. For example, the "download firmware updates" section of the website says "coming soon".
This is a gadget for gadget freaks, not the meaningful replacement for the bedside clock radio it pretends to be. I guess we will have to wait until a real consumer products company like Apple or Sony figures out how to make a device of this type which actually is fun, easy and intuitive to use.
My Wired Connection July 4, 2010 Rollie (San Jose) The good: Remote control beats the competition. Big bright display. Easy to navigate. Easy to add channels through web or from unit. Pretty good sound. I like the progress bar when you switch channels. Compact. Ability to use a wired connection.
The bad: My line of sight between unit and router was blocked by a refrigerator and corner wall and microwave. So I could not wirelessly connect without many problems. This may be true of all internet radios where you need a good line of site. I was expecting the same connectivity as my laptop, but that was not the case.
I run a wired connection now from my router to the kitchen to the back of the unit. The result is that I now NEVER get slow buffering, failed connections or weak signals, or have to cycle on and off. So the wired connection works flawlessly.
I use external speakers also. I am now happy with the unit and will now dump my XM radio subscription for the home.
Great product, really versatile June 24, 2010 Lee T. Gilbert (Northern New Jersey) Product works great, easy to set up and connect. Extra bonus is the USB port for playing MP3 files, and the FM radio. Good customer support - one of the Internet stations changed streaming, and support resolved the problem quickly. Easy to update firmware wirelessly.
Very good deal, small bug June 16, 2010 Critic Critter (Baltimore, MD, USA) Quite a decent product: the price is very low, the sound is decent (and RCA outputs allow you to plug it to a HiFi system) and operating/setting up the radio is easy. I have not tested/owned other WiFi radios, so I cannot offer a comparative review. So far the radio has been working pretty decently. Navigation and so on is quite straightforward. You set up your favorites through aluratek vtuner page. The USB connection is awesome. I have a portable HDD with all my MP3 and I can listen to them in a breeze (so it acts as a good substitute for a CD/DVD player). My only problem so far has been that the radio sometimes reports that it cannot get IP (or cannot find server), after having been working for days without problem. I read somewhere to upload firmware from Aluratek. I did. It did not solve the issue (at least not immediately). I read somewhere that sometimes the radio required a number of ON/OFF cycles to get its act together again and link correctly to the router. This worked. But the problem recurs from time to time. Which does not make a lot of sense (I mean, if it's properly configured and I don't change anything in the router... why should it stop working all of a sudden). The only annoying thing is that if you re-locate the wi-fi network to see if that helps getting your IP, the radio will forget the WEP key for your network, so you will have to type it again.
In brief, works fine (very good for the price, really), but in my setup it has this little bug of sometimes not getting the IP when you turn it on (I would say 1 in 10 times). Other people don't report anything of the sort, so it might be my setup/modem particulars. Who knows? Otherwise, a very cool gadget, very easy to use, intuitive and useful.
