Great Temporary Shade March 7, 2010 Amber Beell We bought this as a temporary shade and it perfectly fit our need. I am glad, however, that I read previous reviews because we were not surprised that it feels like it is made out of construction paper... We needed a privacy shade for our glass door before we find a nice bamboo one that we are Still searching for. This black shade may not be made of the best quality material but it stuck on very easily and has stayed perfectly for months now. I can pull on the bottom to make it longer and it is not going to unstick on the top. We cut the first one a little too much so it was great that it came with 6!!!
It does the job, well! February 24, 2010 C. nguyen I got these because I wanted shades to block out the sun so that I could sleep in. They definitely block out the sun. And surprisingly, these are pretty sturdy. I mean, so far they are standing up to me putting them up and down on a daily basis and I've had these for about 5 months now. And not to mention they look great. It's hard to tell that they are just paper!
Makes for good sleep, a nice dark room February 14, 2010 M. A. McAuley I live in a small studio apartment. There are 7 windows in the one main room. I already had 3 of these shades installed on the "street side" to cut down on street light filtering in through the opaque mini blinds. Recently worked a night job, so I purchased more and hung them over the four windows on opposite side. I'm sure a thick black cloth shade would make even darker (these are heavy paper), but they still shut out the sun effectively enough for me to sleep in the daytime, and they are much more affordable! This is not a permanent dwelling for me. They last through many months of use, fairly easy to raise and lower, easy to install. Note: the adhesive will damage paint some if you remove entirely, but most landlords repaint after someone has rented for awhile anyway. We are talking a small area. I must say in my place I would prefer the look of the white Redi Shades, but I read in someone's review of those that they don't work quite as well. All in all a good, affordable product that has worked well for me.
Good product February 6, 2010 D. Woods (Columbus OH USA) I bought these to put in a south facing room that gets too much heat and sun in the summer. The windows aren't rectangular - top slopes to match roofline - so a metal, plastic or wood blind wouldn't work. They did exactly what I bought them for - my summer electric bill decreased by 30%. The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is that the double sided tape needs to be stronger.
Definitely Opaque to Light. Some Adhesive Issues. January 30, 2010 G. Cox (Shanghai, China) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
After successfully cutting two shades to length, I was actually very pleased with the installation. However, both window shades fell down by themselves within a couple of hours after putting them up. To make matters worse, the shades fell in such a way that the adhesive layer stuck to another part of the shade about one-third of the way down and basically ruined itself. Now I know why this product is sold in a six-pack. I found that I have to use thumbtacks to hold them up. Cutting was relatively easy. I used a sharp kitchen butcher knife and found a continuous sawing action to work best. Do not use a serrated bladed knife. You need to put a weight on the widest part of the shades while cutting. Otherwise, when you are almost finished cutting, it will unfold itself making it difficult to cut the remaining layers.
As one other reviewed stated, the full length of these shades is about 72 inches. That means for a standard 3 foot by 6 foot window, you will not have a pleated appearance anymore. Yes, you can see where the folds are, but it really looks stretched out. And that brings us to the next point. I had to add my own double sided tape to the end to hold it against the window sill. It would have been nice if they had put peel and stick adhesive on both ends. But the ever so slight stretching to full length pulls on the upper adhesive thus pulling it loose after a couple of hours. It stretches out on its own, especially at the top where gravity is greatest due to the accumulated weight of the paper.
After I finished my installation of these shades, I was ready to give it a solid 5 star rating. But after they fell and the resulting mess with it sticking to itself, I lost my enthusiasm. But now I know I must use thumbtacks to hold it up. I will still use the shades with thumbtacks. But I really do think they should have added enough length to maintain some pleated appearance in a standard 3X6 foot window. This is a very common sized window. Of course, for this price there is no pull cord to adjust the length if you want to let in some sunlight or look outside.
Update: I think I made a mistake when I installed the adhesive side to the underside of the window opening because this is a painted drywall surface. (But it is a smooth flat surface.) So I changed where I put the adhesive side to the frame of the window itself. This is a fairly thin surface, but the adhesive sticks a lot better to the metal frame than the painted drywall. It has stayed put for neary two weeks now.)
It is definitely opaque to sunlight. This is what I wanted for my home theater room. Prior to this, there was way just too much reflection in my new 65 inch Panasonic HDTV to watch a movie in the daytime. So these shades do work quite well. Make sure you cut it snugly to the right width to keep out unwanted sunlight around the edges. Measure the width at the top and bottom and the middle to find the narrowest dimension to customize the shade width.
